Sri Lankan Gowa Mallum (Short-Cooked Cabbage with Grated Coconut)

Sri Lankan cuisine is best known for its rice and curry. This recipe will show you how to make a delicious, healthy and light Sri Lankan dish called gowa mallum. It's based on cabbage and coconut and is short-cooked in order to preserve the health benefits of the cabbage.

1 lb fresh green cabbage

1 small onion

1/2 cup of grated coconut

2 cloves garlic

1/2 tsp mustard

2 pinches of cinnamon powder

2 pinches of black pepper powder

1 pinch of turmeric powder

2 tbsp vegetable oil

1 leaves branch curry

salt to taste

1.  Cut the cabbage and the onion separately into small pieces and chop the garlic into tiny pieces.

2.  Put the grated coconut in a bowl with the garlic pieces, mustard, cinnamon, black pepper, turmeric and salt. Mix it very well by hand.

3.  Add the cabbage to the mix and mix it thoroughly by hand.

4.  Heat the vegetable oil in a pot. Add the onion and the branch of curry leaves to the pot as soon as the oil is hot and fry until light brown.

5.  Add the cabbage mixture, cook it for 5 minutes on low fire.

6.  Taste and add salt if necessary.
