Directions:

1

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2

Combine flour, sugar, yeast and salt in a large bowl and mix together.

3

In a smaller bowl, mix together the milk (should be warm to the touch but not hot), oil, and beaten egg.

4

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until well-incorporated. It should be the consistency of cake batter.

5

Pour bread mixture into a well-grease 8×8 glass dish. If using a metal dish, turn oven down to 375 degrees. Set the pan aside, covered with a dish towel, and let the dough rise for 15 to 20 minutes.

6

Bake bread for 20 minutes, or until it reaches a deep golden brown. Check for doneness by inserting a butter knife into the middle. If it comes out clean, the bread is done.

7

Slice into 12 delicious squares and enjoy!

This is so simple to make and inexpensive. This one is done on your barbecue but could easily be done in the stove.

A simple spice bread with humble chuck wagon origins. A staple in my family's Southern kitchen for breakfasts, brunches, teas, and afternoon snacks.
