My son and I love to cook (and eat!!) together. We decided a while back to start sharing some of our favorite recipes online. Since I've always needed to cook economically and I learned frugality from my parents and grandparents after they lived through the depression, those lessons are reflected in my cooking!! And who can't stand to save some money on food??!! Stop by our blog at My Blog: Dirt Cheap Dinners for more dirt cheap recipes!!

I’d been making a pretty standard version of Beef Burgundy (Boeuf Bourguignon) for several years, when one night at a friend’s house, she served a very unique version of a meal by the same name. She’d found it in a heart-healthy cookbook which she was using since her husband’s bypass ..
I doubt that there’s any culture that doesn’t have some form of beef stew. Simmering meat, usually beef, with veggies in a rich gravy is a classic, extremely healthy comfort food. Granted, some of the nutrients are cooked out of the vegetables, but they end up in the gravy which is usually ..
I must admit to total ignorance of the treasure that is bread pudding until just a few short years ago…. I had always thought something along the lines of “bread pudding?? uggggghhhhh – sounds dry and BORRRRRRRING!!” Then one day at work, we had a pot luck (we had a LOT of those :-D ) ..

Homemade Caramel Sauce is so quick and easy to make at home, you'll never need to buy anything like it ever again!! It can replace butterscotch topping for ice cream and the extremely pricey sauces they sell in the produce section to dip their apples in, and of course, this can be used over ..
This is an awesome spread that’s as surprising as it is delicious!! The original recipe calls for fresh cranberries, but since their season is so short, one spring I decided to try the same thing with canned berries – no difference in the end result at all (but a HUGE difference in the price)!! ..

I just can't imagine having turkey without cranberries, can you?? I have a hard time believing there was a time when I just picked up a couple cans of cranberries and that was it!! Mind you, cranberries in any form are GREAT!!!! But cooking the berries and adding all sorts of nummy spices ..

This is the classic version made by the Olive Garden restaurants. The original recipe makes a HUGE batch, so I've scaled it down a bit and changed some of the proportions. The way I see it, if some meat and veggies are good, more have GOT to be better, right? It is SO good, I thought I'd ..
Years ago, my friend, Darrell, made what he called “peach dumplings”, an old recipe he’d learned while working in his mom and dad’s restaurant in our small southern Missouri town. Now, my mom had made “plum dumplings” quite often back in the dark ages when I was a kid (which were ..
Wow, pepper steak is one of my FAVORITE meals!! I've been making it since not long after I started cooking on my own. I must have had it somewhere, to know what it tasted like in the first place. All I knew was that I loved it and wanted to make it myself at home. And since I just LOVE me ..
Last summer we were planning a bridal shower for my daughter and her fiancé. One of the items we decided on for the menu was seafood salad. Well, being my usual cheap self, of course I couldn’t see paying someone else for the labor and the inflated prices of the ingredients. So we made it ..

One of our favorite old-time appetizer favorites is a shrimp spread which we usually use a jello mold to shape, hence the name. It’s chock-full of nummy stuff, including, of course, shrimp!! Since I’m not making Thanksgiving dinner this year, my daughter, son and I are bringing along all the ..
I first had a dish by a similar name (Blue Sapphire Basil) at our favorite Thai restaurant a couple years ago. (Thai basil is a dark bluish-green basil.) And, since it’s impossible to just eat out whenever I get a hankering for something like this, well, what else? You make it at home, right? ..
